A Look Behind The Design Curtain…

Hello Beautiful Fiber Friends!

Today, I’m pulling back the curtain to share my design process for creating knitting and crochet patterns. Whether you’re a fellow designer, an avid maker, or simply curious about what goes into creating a pattern, I hope this glimpse into my personal workflow inspires you.

My journey as a designer has been shaped by years of studying Fashion Design, with a focus on knitwear, at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC and Polimoda in Florence, Italy. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to work in the fashion industry, collaborate with yarn companies, and create patterns that I hope will inspire and empower makers of all shapes and sizes. They say every stitch tells a story, and I’m grateful to share my journey with you. Unfortunately, this newsletter subject was sparked by a topic of discussion recently plaguing the knitting & crochet community: unauthorized sharing of paid patterns and its impact on designers like me. As of late, a Discord channel has been freely sharing paid patterns, and in doing so, have violated copyright laws that protect independent designers like me.

When you purchase a pattern, you’re not just getting a set of instructions, you’re supporting the creativity and passion that go into each design, not to mention the hours of trial and error, interviewing yarns, size grading, sample making, photography, photo editing and perfecting the pattern layout and instructions for the downloadable file. Last week, a YouTube Vlogger reached out to let me know they accidentally shared a free download code from a pattern collaboration I worked on. This was an honest mistake, but one that resulted in 20 of my patterns being downloaded for free. That’s a $200 loss, an amount that might seem small to some, but for me it’s my main source of income and the difference between providing and not providing things for my family.

Unauthorized sharing of pirated patterns makes it harder for designers to continue creating. If you love a pattern, please support the designer by purchasing it directly. If cost is an issue, many designers (myself included) offer discounts, free patterns, or pay-what-you-can options. All you have to do is reach out. Let’s continue to work together to foster a community that values and respects the hard work of creators. I thought by seeing how much work actually goes into creating a pattern and bringing it to life, it may foster a bit more respect for the art form. So buckle up buttercups…

Inspiration

Every design begins with a spark of inspiration. For me, it could be anything: a song, an image, a vintage textile, or even a stitch pattern I stumble upon while swatching. Inspiration is everywhere, but the key is to capture it and let it simmer until it transforms into a clear vision.

Above is the mood board created for the Vanrey Knits X Chelsea Yarns 2024 advent calendar pattern collaboration. The theme was the wild west at dusk, aka Chelsea on the Ranch, and incorporated elements of fun, fringe and texture.

Sketches

Once I have an idea, I grab my sketchbook and start doodling. As a designer, sketching helps me visualize the shape, structure, and details of the design. I ask myself questions like:

• What kind of garment or accessory is this?

• What stitches or techniques will bring it to life?

• Who is this design for, and how will they wear it?

This stage is all about exploration and play.

Shown to the left are the sketches for the “Frostina Poncho and Ember Cowl”.

Swatching

Swatching is where the magic happens. I experiment with different yarns, needle sizes, and stitch patterns to see what works best for the design. This step is crucial because it ensures the fabric has the right drape, texture, and gauge. I often swatch multiple times, tweaking the stitch pattern or adjusting the tension until I’m satisfied. The drape and texture can really make or break a design. It’s a labor of love, but it’s worth it to create a pattern that knitters and crocheters will enjoy making.

Writing Up the Pattern

With the design and swatch finalized, it’s time to write out the pattern. This involves breaking down the design into clear, easy-to-follow instructions. I aim to make my patterns accessible to makers of all skill levels, so I include detailed explanations, charts, and photos where needed. I will then send it to a tech editor to grade if the pattern is a garment or work on grading it with Dani. I also test my patterns rigorously, either by knitting / crocheting them myself or putting out a test call and sending them to a trusted group of test knitters. Their feedback is invaluable and helps me catch any errors or confusing sections before the pattern is released.

Photography

While the pattern is in testing, I move on to photography. I want the images to showcase the design in its best light, so I carefully style and photograph the finished piece myself. I do the best I can with a tripod and timer. I work with what I have and aspire to have a professional photographer take pictures in the future. I will use these images for the pattern pdf file, Ravelry /Etsy / Website listings and for any social media posts, as well.

Formating, and Publishing

Once I get all the feedback from the trusted pool of testers and amend any mistakes or pattern updates, I will send it back to the tech editor just to have a second set of eyes on it. After it comes back, the pattern gets edited, schematics get illustrated and created, formatted and turned into the gorgeous pdf. that gets uploaded and purchased. Once complete, a pattern listing is created and it then gets uploaded it to my website, Etsy and Ravelry.

Publishing a pattern is always a mix of excitement and nerves. It’s a vulnerable feeling to put your work out into the world, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to see knitters bring your design to life and also make it their own. Shown left is the formatted page and schematic that I created for the “Frostina Poncho “ pattern pdf.

Marketing & Social Media

Publishing a knitting or crochet pattern is just the beginning. The real magic happens when you bring it to life through marketing and social media! From sneak peeks and teaser posts to behind-the-scenes videos and engaging launch-day strategies. Sharing your creative process builds excitement and connection with your community.

Whether it’s a Reel, Story, Tik Tok, Bluesky post, newsletter feature, collaboration with testers and or hosting a fun make-along in community with makers, every touchpoint turns your pattern into an experience.

In conclusion…

Designing knitting and crochet patterns is a journey filled with creativity, challenges, and joy. I’m so grateful to be part of this vibrant community and to share my passion with all of you. I’m also so grateful to all of you who have been on this journey alongside me, cheering me on, purchasing a pattern, a box, joining a make-along or even just sending me a message of hope to help me keep forging ahead when I’ve just wanted to give up.

Please let me know if you would be interested in me sharing my resources for inspiration, graphic design and also for design and trend inspiration. Thank you for supporting independent designers and for being part of a community that celebrates handmade creativity. Let’s keep the stitches flowing and the inspiration growing!

Until next time friends…

So, dust off those hooks & needles and get ready for the most fabulous Fall yet! 🍁

Beginning Friday, 10/18 and lasting until Sunday 10/20, the Hudson Valley will be swarming with fiber lovers partaking in the most wonderful of festive fiber activities: CAKEpalooza, Indie Untangled, A Woolen Affair, Jill Draper’s Open Air Studio and the diamonds of all fiber festivals, the New York Sheep and Wool Festival at the Duchess County Fairgrounds, otherwise simply known as Rhinebeck!

We’ve gathered a list of incredible activities and experiences that’ll make your visit one to remember.

It's the VanRey (Kn)IT LIST, Rhinebeck 2024 Edition!!

Cake Cake Cake Cake…

e.

Alissa Baptista, the beautiful mind behind Cake Wool Co. invited me to be a guest at this year’s CAKEpalooza! I showcased my knitwear designs, celebrated the release of the Honeycomb Dreams pattern and had Fiber Genie yarn available for purchase. Dani and I will be spent our day sharing the fab booth of knitwear designer, Kimberly McAlindin.

CAKEpalooza is an incredible opportunity to connect with fellow fiber friends and celebrate our love for all things yarn. It was a joy seeing fiber friends old and new.

Other Events…

Along with CAKEpalooza, these Indie Untangled & Wool & Folk are two mini-festivals that also kick off the weekend’s wool-filled fun! Just be sure to plan ahead—both events require tickets, and some have specific time slots. Be sure to check out each festival’s website for details on times and vendor info.

Top: Indie Untangled, Saugerties, NY

Bottom: A Woolen Affair, Red Hook, NY

NY Sheep & Wool Festival

This annual gathering is pure magic for knitters, crocheters, spinners, and fiber enthusiasts alike. Whether you're looking for unique yarns, learning new techniques, or just soaking in the vibrant east coast Fall vibes, Rhinebeck is THE place to be! 💫 The best part of this amazing weekend (besides people watching) is being able to connect with fiber friends and find endless inspiration in the incredible talent and creativity that fills every corner of this festival. From the sheep, to the hand-dyed fibers and beyond, Rhinebeck is more than just a marketplace—it’s a fiber lover's paradise!! 🧡

Some Fav Rhinebeck Recs…

Sweet Horse Design Co.-

Created with up to 30 plus yarns and fibers, including fabric, silk, cotton, rayon, wool, metallics, other quality yarns, these unique potluck creations are a vibrant textured landscape making beautiful and one of a kind skeins.

Apple Cider Donuts

Anyone who’s been to NYSW knows that upon arrival one of the first lines you get yourself into is the Apple Cider Donut line! These fluffy autumnal treats are all the rage at the Fairgrounds

Iris Creek Farm

A repeat rec from last year but a goody, this is THE booth for all of the most fabulous fashion and curly lock collar inspo! ICF is a small family farm in CT raising Leicester Longwool sheep, as well as a menagerie of barnyard friends. Grab some amazing curly locks in a myriad of colors to zhuzh up the collar of any hand knit cardi.

Dusty’s Vintage Buttons

A forever recommendation and one of my very favorite booths for the most stunning, one of a kind, beautifully curated, vintage button collections, circa 1850- 1970. Definitely don’t skimp here.

Pucker Brush Farms

The most magical hand dyed bulky mohair yarn there ever was. One skein creates an ethereal 7 Wonders Shrug fit for a fairy queen. Scoop up a skein or 2…or 3…

Sunday Fiber Fun…

Every year, the Jill Draper Open Air Studio event is hands-down one of my favorite experiences. Picture this: a grand open air pavilion filled with fellow fiber lovers, all surrounded by the stunning fall colors of the Hudson River. You can shop Jill Draper’s beautiful hand-dyed yarn, enjoy a tasty treat, and share your latest projects in this picturesque setting. Craving a peaceful moment? Tuck away in one of the cozy nooks for some quiet stitches and riverside reflection and the best part, it’s free to attend.

The support I’ve received this year is immeasurable. Some of you truly went out of your way to support me and my dreams, and for that I will be forever grateful! I’m even more excited to see where we are this time next year. I have so many ideas and designs swimming around in my head and wish I had the capability to get them out to you faster! But First…

             The Stevie Knits Experience

When VRK began and I started working with Dani, it was only matter of time before a shawl came out of us fit for the Golden Goddess herself, Stevie Nicks! The White Winged Dove Shawl, an homage to her rock ballad Edge of Seventeen, is an ethereal knit, evocative of the Rock & Roll era of Haight Ashbury in the 1960s/70s.

Made of lofty 100% recycled sari silk, lace and sequin novelty yarn, this knit is quick and dirty like the rockstars of its time! An airy feel, an intuitive airy lace repeat and huge needles make this shawl the weekend project that dreams are made of!

The Experience is over now but was offered in many forms, you can peep the options below that were offered:

  • The Backstage Box is a very limited edition curated box of goodies to go along with the Stevie Knits Experience! You not only receive the digital pattern pdf., but two skeins of sari silk yarn in “Dove”, a special collaboration between Vanrey Knits and the Fiber Genie yarn. Two mini skeins of lace and sequin novelty yarn for fringe, two handmade chakra crystal stitch markers, Tuft Woolens for Vanrey Knits Knitting Balm, a Stevie Knits notions pouch filled with more magical treats, two community Zoom sessions, access to a private Instagram group, along with a few video tutorials to aid in demystifying the shawl pattern!

  • Front Row Tickets (an Experience & Community option) includes the digital shawl pattern pdf., two Community Zoom sessions, access to a private insta group, and knitting tutorials!

  • The Solo Artist - You just want the pattern and to find your own yarn to make it with? Fine by us! Light a candle, flip on the record player and create your own peaceful knitting experience!

Experiences went on sale Sunday, September 8th at 12 pm ET

** There were very limited amounts of The Backstage Box and they sold out within 4 hours, so if you are considering joining our next experience, we would suggest being signed up for the newsletter.

☀️ It feels so good to finally let Stevie Knits out into the world! Dani and I have been talking about this experience box since late last year and the fact that it’s almost time for release is giving me all the feels!!

☀️ Speaking of Dani. . . This journey wouldn’t have been the same without my incredible bestie and fiber partner in crime. Her unwavering support and endless creativity have been a constant source of inspiration. She has not only stood by my side through every plot twist and turn, but has also reminded me to believe in myself and keep going during some of the darkest days, all while playing an essential role in Vanrey Knits' success this year. Her friendship has not only lifted me up but has been an integral part of the heart and soul behind Vanrey Knits’ growth this year. Thank you, Dani, for always being my anchor and muse. Mermaid Core

"Always be yourself, unless you can be a mermaid. Then, always be a mermaid."

Hello, My Beautiful Friends!

I hope you’re all enjoying your summer thus far. I don’t know about you, but ever since I was a little girl, I turn into a mermaid whenever I happen to be in a body of water. For me that even includes the town pool. It’s no wonder, since I grew up loving the movie Splash. All that to say, I am trying my best this summer to savor each day (even if it’s hot as Hades), lean into things that bring me joy and really enjoy time with my boys (especially while Teddy Bear is still little and let’s me squeeze him).

Speaking of spectacular sirens, for this months newsletter we dive into the magical world of Mermaid Core and explore the depths of creativity and the waves of inspiration that come with all things sea inspired. Thank you so much also for being here week after week and sharing my love for fiber and community with you… and themes!! You know I love a good theme!

Come along with us to find a treasure trove of projects, trinkets, beauty and baubles that will make your crafting heart sing like a siren. 🌊🧜‍♀️💕

First let me start by thanking everyone who joined in on the Le Trio KAL!  Dani and I had such a fun time seeing all your beautiful faces on zoom and we can’t wait to do it again!!

☀️ Since the KAL ended, I have been working away on finishing the Honeycomb Dreams sweater and readying it for testing. It is both crochet and knit and if you are interested in testing please feel free to email us at testvanreyknits@gmail.com to be considered.

☀️Jeanie from the Fiber Genie Yarn Co. and I found the most luxurious Sari Silk that will be used for this project and another one coming down the pike!  Thank you for your continued support, Jeanie!! It means the world!

☀️ Dani and I have been like little bees working away on a passion project. It’s centered around our shared loves for knitting and Stevie Nicks! Hopefully we will be able to share a lot more about that with you very very soon! All I can say is, ready yourself for a BACKSTAGE PASS to fiber fabulousness!! 🤘🏻

☀️ We will now travel back to Florence, Italy, where I'll leave you with a photo of my beautiful Playboy bunny bestie, Joce (Happy Birthday tomorrow!!!!), and 21-year-old me in the mermaid costume I whipped up in design school for our Halloween party at club “Space Electronic” (the name ahaha). This costume won me the trip of a lifetime to Amsterdam, just being myself and a mermaid…

Summer Summer Summer Time!

Summer is Here!

Hi My Beautiful Friends!

The Summer sun is finally upon us! I feel like I was just at Rhinebeck, blinked, and now long warm days at the pool and evenings of firefly catching are here! It is always said that when you have kids the days are long and the years are short, which is so very true.

Lately, I’ve been doing my best to be present for all of my sons’ end-of-the-school year activities. There are so very many! Ben is almost 11, taller than me and growing up too fast! Teddy is 6, that delicious age where he is so sweet, funny, and still actually wants me around to hug and cuddle. I’m really trying to savor every moment with them.

Hello Summer Edition!

Let’s Just Sit Back and Unwind…

Helllooo Friends!

It’s finally June, and you know what that means… Summer is upon us! You all know I live for a Fall moment and all things sweater weather, but I also have such a pure love for summertime. BTS here at VRK!

☀️ The GOOD NEWS is I have begun remaking the Honeycomb Dreams top with Jeanie’s (Fiber Genie Yarn Co.) gorgeous hand-dyed sari silk and it’s beyond luxurious! I’m hoping to get this finished pattern to you in the very very near future so you can wear it on those breezy summer nights!! Twirl!! Testing call coming soon!

☀️ Dani and I have been diligently working on something super fabulous coming soon to VRK. I don’t want to give it all away yet but it involves yarn, the witchy vibes of Stevie Nicks, and an entire stitching experience! Stay tuned, Stitch Witches. . . something wicked (and freaking fabulous) this way comes!

☀️ Today marks 2 years since my Dad passed. He was love, light and the best Dad there ever was. To say I miss him everyday is an understatement, he was one of the loves of my life and there is a hole in my heart that will always be there without him in the world. I look for him everyday in butterflies, signs, and the crooked sweet smiles of my sons. His very last words to me before he passed were “I love you, I love you”. What a gift to be so loved by someone. I guess that’s why it hurts so much that he is gone. Tell your people you love them, show up for them when you can and love them with all you have. Sending you all hugs.

Until next time…

I hope your life is full of sunshine, sparkles, stitching and twirling!

Meet Le Trio!!!

Greetings, Beautiful Friends!

I hope you all had a fabulous week full of sunshine! The last couple of weeks have kept me super busy! I’ve been spending time with my kiddos on their Spring Break, taking care of some health stuff, and doing my best to finish up two accessory pattern designs, which are all knit this time, no crochet. Can you even believe it?

You’ve already met Le Backpack, but today I’d like to introduce Le Cinch, the 2nd of the three sister designs. A fab corset belt with a textured basket weave design (pictured below). Your new instant favorite accessory! It gives a beautiful waist to all those shapeless summer mumu dresses and tells everyone your knitting isn't just for show… it has function too!

If you’ve been following along, you know the Le Fanny bag, the 3rd of the three sister designs, has been on its way for a while. Well, its debut is almost here! This knitted belt bag is sure to be a summer fave as you traipse about in your sun-friendly garbs. But did you know it’s the last installment of the Le Trio Collection?

Let’s take another look at the three sister designs of Le Trio and get super excited for the upcoming Knit-Along slated for early June, where we can make one or all of them together! You just need to purchase one of the 3 “Le Trio” patterns (the belt or one of the bags) to join in. There will be prizes, community Zoom hangs and fun! But for now…

It's the VanRey (Kn)IT LIST, Three Sisters Edition!!

Le Cinch Corset Belt Knitting Pattern

The 2nd addition to the three sisters collection is Le Cinch… an adorable and wildly useful corset tie belt, available in ten size ranges!

Made from faux suede leather cord, this belt is a simple basket weave pattern knit to within an inch of your belly-button. Ties are added to each side and finished off with tassels bc who doesn’t love tassels! The sizes available range from XS to 5XL, but with some simple customization, this belt will work for anyone and everyone whom wishes to make one!

Le Cinch is one of those me-made accessories we all need to elevate our already fabulous wardrobe pieces and it looks good on EVERY BODY! It polishes those flowy summer dresses and looks fab over a squishy loose sweater when a little cinch is all that's needed to look more mod! Whip one up in a weekend and off you go!!!

Le Fanny Belt Bag Knitting Pattern

Think you’ve used your knitting and stitching to make all the things you can possibly make with those skills? Think again! Le Fanny, the last of the three sisters, makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about your favorite hobby!

Made from leather-like t-shirt yarn, Le Fanny is the belt bag of your dreams! With a cute rounded trapezoid design, knitted back panel and open lace front panel, this bag is as useful as it is chic! Simply knit the front, then the back, add the D-rings and waist strap, toss in a zipper and voila!! Who knew you already had the know-how to create such a thing!!

Le Fanny will take your stitching outside your comfort zone and teach you that handbag construction is not out of your reach!

Le Backpack Knitting Pattern

In case you missed it, the first of the three sister designs was released a few months ago and featured backpack construction, Sari Silk fabric and a knitted seed stitch pattern! I made the original bag out of a hand-dyed rainbow silk yarn, but that was quickly eclipsed by the gorgeous orange version Miss GGMadeIt finished about a month ago. Check out her insta to see just how beautiful it turned out!!

Le Backpack takes you on a stitching trip you've possibly not gone down before with a design that relies on hardware components to become what it is meant to be. Grab your needles and a hammer, learn some new skills, and give Le Backpack a try!

Beyond Le Trio!

Beyond the three patterns above, I’m working away on my exclusive design for this years Chelsea Yarns Advent calendar! What an honor and a privilege it is to have been asked by Christina to design for this year’s holiday countdown mini-skein box! I’m super excited and can’t wait to share that design with you! Want a sneak peak? All I can say is: FRINGE!!!!

Dani and I have also been tossing-around some new concepts to further build community here at VanReyKnits! You all know we love classic rock and it has definitely been inspiring some new ideas for both get-togethers and soon to be released products. We also would love some of your input, so please don’t ever hesitate to DM us with your ideas!

And lastly, the newsletter will be taking on a new format to allow us more time to work on products and designs here at VRK, so you will only be hearing from us in newsletter form once a month. Should we have a new release or info to get out to you, an email will certainly go out with details for that specific happening…

Until Next Time…

May your days be full of sunshine, endless inspiration and the spreading of kindness.

Thank you for your continued support. Means the world!!

XO, Vanessa

2024 Spring Knitwear Trends

Trend Report

Spring is spranging, and the knitwear scene is bursting with fab colors, new silhouettes, and endless texture like never before! From liquid gold to soothing pastels and fabulous fringe, each stitch tells a story of creativity and joy.

Embrace the flowy elegance of knit maxi dresses or opt for the structured sophistication of a cropped crochet polo paired with high-waisted bottoms. Texture reigns supreme, with mighty mesh, intricate lace, and airy open stitches adding a depth and dimension to every piece.

Chock full of inspiration, I hope this trend report will inspire you to make Spring 2024 your most stylish yet!

🌸

Mesh Stitch and Collared Button Downs

A masterful blend of vintage charm and modern edge, the crochet mesh stitch intertwines with collared button-down shirts, stitching together a tale of timeless elegance with a contemporary twist in the fabric of knitwear trends.

Peplum Waist

In a delightful dance of curves and contours, the fit and flare peplum waist silhouette cinches knitwear trends with a playful yet polished flair, making every wearer the center of a stylish whirlwind.

Maxi Dresses and Skirts

As knitwear gracefully cascades into the realm of maxi dresses and skirts, it's not just a trend, it's a knit-tastic saga of comfort meeting couture, where every stitch tells a story of effortless elegance with a floor-sweeping twist.

Fringe

As fringe takes center stage in the world of knitwear, it's not just a trim, it's the unraveled secret to adding a touch of whimsy and movement to your wardrobe, it's a playful tango of texture where every sway brings a touch of bohemian chic to the fabric of fashion.

Texture and Stitch Inspo

As textured and 3-dimensional stitches knit their way into the forefront of fashion, it's not just a stitch in time, it's a tactile revolution that elevates knitwear from flat to fabulous, adding layers of depth and dimensionality to every ensemble.

Color

As the fashion palette swirls with the allure of liquid gold, the boldness of cherry red, and the purity of porcelain white, it's a symphony of buttery yellows, delicate lilacs, glacial blues, and fuzzy peaches that paints knitwear in hues as deliciously diverse as a fruit basket at a royal feast. Why settle for a rainbow when you can wear it?"

Yarn

As the knitwear world embraces a back-to-basics ethos, we're spinning tales of chic sustainability with the rise of linen's laid-back luxury, cotton's cool comfort, and silk's smooth sophistication - because in the fabric of fashion, going natural never looked so fabulous.

As your hooks & needles click and the yarns intertwine, I hope this smattering of knitwear trends, leave you wrapped in a cocoon of style and ready to weave your own fashion-forward adventures into the fabric of tomorrow.

Spending so much time in the Clinton Hill Cashmere booth was just so good for the soul! Becky, her team, and her family are the warmest of people and I greatly appreciated being included in their fiber family. I got to see so many of you wonderful humans… I don’t think I’ve stopped smiling since. Some of you made me laugh so hard I was crying… the absolute best laughing there is. I didn’t realize how much I truly needed this trip until I was home and re-adjusting to reality. I’m just so thankful to be a part of such a magical community.

With that being said, I didn’t buy much, but I did see some majorly drool worthy items and I will share them with you below. I got to play with vintage buttons, incredible patterns, and gorgeous color palettes from some super fab yarn companies! It’s all on my wishlist for future purchase and you should add it all to yours as well!

Let’s take a moment to revisit some of the gorgeous things I saw at VKL and also pay homage to some languishing WIPS I need to finish before I buy anything new!

It's the VanRey (Kn)IT LIST, WIPs & Wishlists Edition!!

New Year, Same Fabulous You!

✨ 2024 ✨ ✨

THE YEAR WE THRIVE!!!

Happy New Year Loveys!

It’s finally a brand New Year!! Our chance to start fresh and leave all the things behind that did not serve us in 2023. More importantly, we want to remind you that you are perfect just the way you are and you do not need to become a new version of yourself just because a ball dropped at midnight and you may have bought a new planner. You are fabulous and 2024 is lucky to have you!

With that being said, fresh starts aren't the worst idea. This year I’m looking into my own lifestyle and working towards improving small things that will make a large impact on my mental and physical health… I’m also trying to find a bit more joy in my everyday, spend more quality time with my boys and make a point of smiling much much more.

To those changes I say yes, and hope to inspire you to lean into them as well. After all, isn't the entire purpose of life to spread happiness and find your own in the process?

This week we introduce you to the possibilities awaiting all of us if we consciously choose to slightly alter our everyday actions and thinking. Simply committing to the smallest, most pointed changes, can make 2024 into the year we thrive instead of just the year we survive.

I hope these suggestions will allow you to see the beauty already inside of you and eliminate anything standing in the way of you showing the world y0ur full sparkle!

But First, Let Me Introduce You To…

The Crystal Visions Cowl!

A VRK for Clinton Hill Cashmere design

Behind the scenes I’ve been working Becky of Clinton Hill Cashmere on a small capsule collection for Vogue Knitting Live in NYC at this month’s end… well, the first pattern is here and I’m so excited to show it to you!

Made from only one skein of CHC’s luxurious Bespoke DK, this beginner friendly crochet pattern will have you hooking like a pro in no time! An adorable accessory comprised of mixed stitches, it’s crocheted flat and then seamed up the back to form the cylindrical cowl shape! It’s that simple! Repeat the pattern once for a small cowl (pictured above) or repeat twice or thrice for a longer, more smooshie neck warmer!

This pattern will be released at the Clinton Hill Cashmere booth at VKL 2024, where I will be with Becky, hoping to say hi to all you beauties…

More to come, but I hope this gets you excited for the upcoming happening, and I’d love to see you there! If not, no worries, we will be planning a future CAL (Crochet-along) with Becky for these fun little collaborative patterns.

Twirl! ✨

Let Me Convince You To Try…

Needle Felting!

One of the things on my little ones Christmas list was a smaller version of a hat I love to wear and designed. Of course I had to whip him up one since this was just one of 3 things that he asked for and the result was adorable!

I found a bitty version close enough to my hat, crocheted the band and needle felted the flowers that adorned the circumference. Now my kiddo not only has a hat that matches mine, but a reminder that mommy will always drop what she’s doing to make a special gift for him.

Needle felting is a wonderful way to use yarn scraps to make something bright, fun and new!

Check out some fun examples of this fiber art (below) and give it a try for yourself. You just need to grab a starter kit and your off! Seriously though, another way to use fiber and your scrappy stash for said new fiber hobby… uh, yes please!

A few reminders that prove Less is More!

Give ‘em a try to reduce stress and increase joy in this new year!

✨  ✨ ✨

Less

Clutter - We are makers. We all have homes overflowing with useful materials, and we don't part easily with anything. Consider taking the time to re-home what you don't need and only keep what you really love! This can also mean clothing, kitchen items, make-up drawers. Pass on what no longer serves you!

More

Focus - Down-sizing doesn’t only mean tangible items. Take the time to rid your mind of the things that don’t need your space & energy, and focus on what really matters to you. This gratitude journal, by Jennifer Walkup, can help you wade through your mental clutter for a more focused 2024.

Less

LESS

Screentime - We can all be enraptured by our devices. That is the unfortunate truth… but did you know you can set your phone to calculate and notify you with how much time you spend on it? Turn on this feature and make a conscious effort to lower that number each week.

More

Being Present - As you try to put your phone down more often, remember to look up and be present in your everyday life. Plan family / friend game nights, brunch at home with besties or a weekend trip away with someone special. You are the author of your own story… write it.

Less

More

Doing - Every time the ball drops we are all ready with a new planner. What if we fill this planner with the things we want to do instead of only the things we have to do? Make yourself a seasonal to-do list and sort everything right into the pages of your planner. Winter: onion soup night with friends; Spring: plant veggie garden; Summer: go antiquing; Fall: Rhinebeck!! Less wanting and more doing!!

BTS here at VRK!

The 7 Wonders Shrug is finally being released!!!! Getttt ready to partyyyyyy!

Sunday, January 7th is the long-awaited release date, so please watch out for the pattern release email in your inbox… In no time you’ll be able to get that baby on your needles!!!!

Le Backpack will be released next, and then on to all the Clinton Hill Cashmere collabs at VKL 2024!! Upon completion of these current projects, we will move on to the tons of other patterns I have swimming in my head… and there are literally tons! I look forward to sharing them with you!

I know I say it often, but sincerely, thank you all for being here with me week after week. It truly is a dream! I hope 2024 brings you health, happiness and immeasurable laughter! xoxo

Have an incredible week full of fiber, love and sparkles!

☀️ Behind the scenes we are at the halfway point in testing the 7 Wonders Shrug! It has been so inspiring and such a joy to see this design come to life. Testing a design is such an important part of bringing a pattern into the world, especially if it’s size inclusive. I want to make sure the fit is perfect across all ten sizes and that the pattern directions are clear and concise.

I have started testing another sample to make sure all the pattern revisions are correct and I’m happy to report they are working famously!  I am so grateful to all of the testers for their hard work and honest feedback. I absolutely could not do any of this without them.

☀️  Le Backpack is being written up and formatted as you read this. I am hoping to get this fun new bag pattern out to you in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more details in our coming newsletters.

** Per our new newsletter release format, we will see you again next week for a Mini BTS Update.

Have an incredible week full of indulgent self-care, and joyful crafty prep for the holiday season!

Kindness & Fiber Edition!

Hello Fabulous Fiber Friends!!!

Have you ever thought about all the wonderful things that come along with crafting? Knitting, crocheting and just working with one’s own two hands in general has so very many health benefits. It has the power to help us destress, recenter ourselves, relax, mentally escape, and find a place of comfort when life becomes too heavy. It also positively affects our brain as we age.

Crafting is a huge source of pride and confidence… that feeling of pure joy when beginning to use one’s own finished object or simply being asked, “Did you make that? Well, yes, yes I did!”

It can also be a powerful tool in fostering happiness in others, whether gifting fiber objects to family or friends, or giving someone the gift of knowledge by teaching them to do it themselves! You not only have the power to make new fiber friends for yourself, but can also find something in common with pretty much anyone on the planet because everyone knows someone that knits or crochets!

In this week’s newsletter we highlight a few things you can do with a little yarn and some crafting knowledge to put good out into the world.

IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE…

Hello My Favorite Crafters!!!!

Now that Halloween is behind us it’s officially the start of the Holiday Season… and you know what that means!! So, get those lists going and find amazing hiding spots in your house!! It’s time for gifting and gift-making!!!

We all have that person in our life for whom we never know what to get, and that finicky friend or family member that hates everything we have ever given them…Hopefully we can help you find / make something for them early enough in the season to not have to pull your hair out at the last minute.

Then there's YOU! We want you to make a list for yourself and leave it conspicuously around the house so your loved ones happen upon it and know what to get you! I know the season is about giving, but you deserve to open a little pile of love too (even if you gift it to yourself)!

Finally, we hope to help you on your way if you wish to do some gift-crafting! We all know knitting and crochet make wonderful heirloom pieces, so if you have someone in your life that’s craft-worthy, here are some patterns to knock out that will wow your recipient and make them feel so much joy!

Get ready, Lovies!!

But First, Let’s Start the Countdown . . .

It’s officially November and holiday-themed mini-skein countdown calendars should be hitting your doorsteps any day now! If you were lucky enough to snag an Advent or one of the many imaginative calendars being offered by the incredible makers in our community, get those needles and hooks ready! If you couldn't snag one or didn't quite try because let’s face it, they're expensive… don't hesitate to make your own!

You probably spent the entire year crafting and are drowning in beautiful leftover nubbin balls from former projects, so get them wound and ready! Enlist a fiber friend and each make a calendar for the other, with scraps! It’s never not the right time to open little bags of yarn!

The patterns below are meant to inspire and are great for mini-skeins, leftovers and stash-diving! Make a wonderful gift for someone close to you while using what you've already got! It’s time to knit/crochet all the scrappy and stripey things!

1. Countdown Cardi by Skeinanigans  2. Just Feel Festive Shawl by Caleisha Ryan  3. Smitten, A Holiday Garland by Emily Ivey  4. Land of Sweets by Helen Stewart  5. Advent Socks 2019 by Natalie Sheldon  6. Thisbe Hat by Charlotte Lee  7. Fairbanks Advent Shawl by Toni Lipsey  8. Númenna Shawl by K.A.M.E. Crochet  9. Crochet Advent Baby Blanket by Lucienne Crochet

Gifting season can be a challenge for some of us. It’s fun to pull out all the holiday decorations, but it’s also extremely exhausting and can be very expensive. Unfortunately, no one really talks about that. So many personalities to cover, so many price-points to match, so much wrapping and wrapping and more wrapping… please allow us to try and make this year a little easier on you.

We hope the suggestions below either help you easily find a gift for someone on your list or inspire you towards coming up with a gift idea of your own! ❤️

Re-Cap Of Rhinebeck

Happy Friday, Beautiful Stitchers!!

While I’m so sad that Rhinebeck 2023 is now but a memory, I’m still aglow from all the warm hugs with fabulous fiber friends! My heart is so full after seeing so many of your beautiful faces and gorgeous knitwear.

I’m grateful to have made it to the fairgrounds this year and I’m even more grateful to have squeezed so very many of you! I almost didn’t go, but I’m so glad I did. As a dear friend put it, most importantly I went to Rhinebeck to show my children that after facing unexpected heartbreak and challenges, you can pick yourself up and go forward with happiness when you are surrounded by people you love.

This year felt very different though. I was going through my pictures and it was right in front of me. I wasn't there as part of a team or representing the ideas or endeavors of others. I was there for myself. My brand. And while this was a bittersweet realization, it was also quite liberating and exciting! Now I truly realize anything is possible! The door is open and I’m twirling right through it!

Let’s take one last look at the magic of the Rhinebeck fairgrounds, while also trying to right some of the wrongs from this past weekend by supporting small businesses that didn't quite have the experience they were expecting, or more importantly, deserved.

United for Wool & Folk Vendors

Whether you attended Rhinebeck this year, or sat this one out, chances are your social media is abuzz with accounts from vendors and attendees alike of this year’s Wool & Folk Festival. Held in Catskill, New York the Friday before Sheep & Wool, a last minute venue change due to inclement weather sent this event into a tailspin and caused it to not deliver the experience most were expecting.

Unacceptable accessibility situations left factions of our beloved community feeling downright unwanted and questioning the show creator’s intentions when advertising this event as inclusive. Ill planning by the events organizers also led to many of its 91 vendors leaving with only a smidge less inventory than when they arrived.

We all know the cost to participate in these shows can make or break a small business if inventory isn't sold at the rate it was projected to sell. Vendors have to not only pay for a booth space, but fill their booth with beautifully handcrafted inventory that cost them for materials and their time. And we haven’t even yet mentioned transportation, food, lodging and hired help in their booths. As a result, it is understandable that vendors from this event feel jilted from organizers having failed to do their part in providing a well-executed event.

If I know anything about this community, it’s that it has a huge heart and when we come together, magic is possible. Well, it’s time to use our powers! Please join us in supporting Wool & Folk vendors as they fill their online stores with remaining inventory and attempt to recoup their losses.

Pictured below are some of the many treasures beloved fiber friends and vendors had for sale. Please click the pink button at the bottom to access a full list of vendors from Wool & Folk 2023 with links directly to their online shops, as compiled by Jeroen of @BoyMeetsYarn (Instagram).

If ever there was a time to support our fiber friends, it’s now!

But First, Let’s Talk About Your Rhinebeck Sweater . . .

You may have noticed that there are a lot of patterns out there named for Rhinebeck, The Rhinebeck Sweater, or some variation of that. What is the significance of that, you ask? Well, the sweater you wear to Rhinebeck is almost as important as securing a place to stay there close to a year in advance!

It has long been the tradition of stitchers attending the NYSW (New York Sheep & Wool) Festival to create a new garment just for the festival, aptly named their Rhinebeck Sweater! As Kay Gardiner describes in her 2022 article for Modern Daily Knitting, “The Rhinebeck Sweater, It’s A Thing", some groups of stitchers together choose to knit the same pattern and show up to the festival as a Sweater Squad. Other knitters / crocheters choose to keep their project and color palette secret until the day of and surprise their fiber friends!

Personally, I like to choose the pattern and yarn, stitch a lot in the beginning, let the project fall by the wayside, cast-on a bunch of new projects in the middle and then race to finish the sweater before the big day… makes it more interesting, ya know?

Whether or not you choose to knit or crochet something new for the NYSW Festival, you will find yourself surrounded by some of the most beautiful stitch witchery you've ever seen! And if you’re in need of some Rhinebeck Sweater inspirations, please find a plethora of patterns named for the infamous garment below. See you there!

(Clockwise from Top Left)

Road to Rhinebeck, Andrea Sanchez

Take Me To Rhinebeck Cocoon, Alia Luria

Ode To Rhinebeck, Beth MacDonald Stone

Rhinebeck Tote Bag, Samantha Brunson

Before the Big Show…

Shop Jill Draper’s gorgeous hand-dyed yarn, enjoy a delightful snack, and share your latest creations amidst this scenic backdrop. Need a serene moment? Alexander McQueen's Spring 2024 Runway Collection exudes a hauntingly exquisite aesthetic, immediately reminding me of Eiko Ishioka's iconic costumes from Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker's Dracula.

The runway pieces’ sculptural silhouettes, so very reminiscent of Ishioka's theatrical grandeur, seamlessly blend Gothic romance with McQueen's signature avant-garde style. Just stunning!

Update on the Seven Wonders Shrug:

I’m currently chugging away at getting the pattern perfected for you… then formatted and out to the tech editor. Here’s a little glimpse into my entire design process.

When I create a pattern, I explore my initial idea by putting pen to paper and illustrating it. I then pick up my needles / hooks and start to work it out through stitching, creating my first sample. Once I’m happy with the garment or accessory sample, I make the object once more by closely following the directions I wrote out, noting any amendments as I stitch.

When my written directions are seemingly perfect, the pattern goes into a Google Doc that together may be edited by myself and a Tech Editor. The pattern instructions are then brought to life through graphic design and a fully polished pattern is ready for testing!

Test-knitters are encouraged to make notes and share their full stitching experience with me, so I may see how my pattern is received by other points of view. Finally, I tweak any remaining loose ends and then the finished pattern is ready for all of you beauties! Twirl!

So, as you can see, it is quite the labor of love, but a labor that I am so grateful to finally be doing for my own brand! As always, thank you for being here with me on this creative journey, and for your endless love and support!

First, a tribute to Isabel, my late grandmother . . .

My Dad’s mother, Isabel Reyes, was born in 1924 in Sogamosa, Colombia. A town nicknamed City of the Sun because of the original Muisca tribal tradition of worshiping their Sun God at the Sun Temple, she remained there until moving to Bogota and on to America at age fifteen.

As a child, I thought my grandmother was larger than life! She gave me such a gift when she taught me to crochet, and I will forever be grateful. I like to think I not only inherited her love of fiber arts, but also her wacky sense of humor, terrible driving skills and most importantly, her fierce love for her family. I dream of someday visiting her birthplace in Sogamosa and meeting my family that remain there.

On that note, I also want to wish my amazing Mama, Corrine (of the Corrine Cardi) a very Happy Birthday today!

Honoring Hispanic & Latinx Designers, Dyers and Weavers

Hispanic heritage and culture run through so many strands of fiber in this community, from hand-dyed yarn to woven fabric, and knitwear design. These artists create such beauty, I couldn't help but share them with you!

Spotlight on knitwear designer Alejandra Alonso Rojas

“Women are the reason and inspiration for everything I do. I want to empower women to feel and look their best and to build a strong emotional bond with them based on lasting fashion, craftsmanship, and quality through positive impact.”  - Alejandra Alonso Rojas

Madrid-born knitwear designer Alejandra Alonso Rojas launched her own brand in 2016 after studying fashion at institutions in Chicago, Madrid, Paris and New York. Inspired by old photos of her family in knitwear, she designs pieces known for their layerability and contrasting textures, creating a casual luxury.

Rojas resurrects cashmere from recycled fibers, dyes her garments naturally, and finds inspiration in the artwork of her mother.  With precision tailoring, each piece is intended to be passed on from generation to generation.
